Lectures

  • Continuing education is the key component of changing the way the disease of addiction is perceived and treated. People who deal with this disease are not stupid. Studies have shown that it is the person who finishes in the top 1/3 of their class that are most likely to develop this disease. The disease of addiction isn't about moral weakness or lack of character. Addiction is a brain disease, and it's main symptoms are aberrant changes in behavior with the overwhelming compulsion to obtain and use a chemical regardless of the negative consequences that occur as a result of the coninued use of that chemical.
  • Because there is very little time or effort spent on the disease of addiction in medical, nursing, or pharmacy programs, the very people who will be called upon to evaluate and treat those with addiction have little, if any, understanding of the disease and how to manage it in the general public, let alone their professional colleagues.
  • APECS provides a comprehensive educational program for health care professionals.

Consulting

  • Obviously, if the health care profession doesn't provide appropriate or adequate education during training, it only makes sense the health care professionals will have inadequate policies and procedures to deal with this disease when it arises in a colleague. In this case, ignorance is NOT bliss, and it is unethical and immoral to remain ignorant about this disease and how it affects the health care professional, the patients they care for, and the institutions they work for and in.
  • APECS will help your department or organization develop policies and procedures which will enable the members of your department or organization recognize the early signs and symptoms of addiction. Early recognition allows for early intervention and treatment, increasing the chance the addict will obtain long term recovery and maintain their license.

InformationResearch

  • There is a growing body of knowledge about addiction. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find this information. APECS has accumulated a wealth of information concerning this disease. If we don't have the information in our files, we will perform a thorough search to find the information you are looking for, and assist you in developing a comprehensive program for you and your colleagues.

Programs for Non-Health Care Related Businesses, Churches, and Community

  • We are developing programs focused on recognition of the early signs of addiction in business colleagues, schools, and the community. Please contact us for a free consultation to determine if we have a program that will assist your school, church or place of business in dealing with this disease.
